Finding Humor in Life

On Giving Birth...
After giving birth I developed a blood clot and had to stay in the hospital for two weeks. Out on the lawn we put ribbons and a big red sign, “It’s a Clot.”

On Other Disabled Drivers...
Have you ever noticed how disabled people drive? They are so-o-o-o slow. I drive fast! It’s the great equalizer, so I really put my pedal to the metal!

On Psychotherapy...
I have been a psychotherapist for the past 40 years. It is incredible the things people worry about: cancer, blood disease, dogs with fleas; narcolepsy, epilepsy, diet Pepsi; migraines, varicose veins, low-flying planes; republicans, independents, codependents. Is codependency a disorder or a tax write-off, or both?

There are basically three kinds of people in life, people who make things happen, people who watch things happen, and people who say “What happened?”

On Bitter People...
There are many people in life that are so negative and fearful that they don’t like to get out of bed in the morning. They even dislike breakfast. What does a professional pessimist have for breakfast? A bowl of drearios with a cup of Carnation Instant Panic, with a side order of cantelope and melancholy?

Disabled Dolls...
There are 49 million disabled people in America, and yet there are few disabled dolls. What if Barbie were disabled? After all, her legs come off the first week. She has a friend, Amputee Annie, who comes with designer crutches. To be purchased separately is the wheelchair accessories kit. She has another friend, Cocaine Ken, who comes with his own beeper. Also sold separately is Paranoid Pete, the doll who won’t come out of the box!

Helpful People...
I’ve almost been killed by many well-meaning people trying to help me down stairs. So now, they won’t even look at me; I’m like the disabled eclipse.

There are many ways to reframe life’s negative events. In essence, however you do it, all of psychology is about giving ourselves permission to make changes in our lives. Give yourself that permission right now. Start making positive affirmations about your abilities and goals. Practice!
